Salah al-Din Castle on Pharaoh’s Island: History in the Gulf of Aqaba

Pharaoh’s Island sits just offshore from Taba in the Gulf of Aqaba. Its restored fortress is commonly known as Salah al-Din Castle, and the island’s position made it valuable for watching maritime and overland routes between Egypt, the Levant and the Arabian Peninsula.
The fortifications include northern and southern sections with rooms, storage areas and defensive structures. The view from the island explains the strategy better than a timeline alone: narrow water, steep surrounding mountains and several shores visible across the gulf.
Access is normally by a short boat trip from Taba, but operating hours and boat availability can change. Confirm locally before building an entire day around the crossing.
Treat the island as an archaeological place, not only a viewpoint. Stay on permitted paths and do not remove fragments. The most honest story here is already dramatic enough—a small granite island controlling a wide regional crossroads.
