SS Thistlegorm: Read the Wreck’s Story Before Entering the Holds

SS Thistlegorm was a British merchant ship sunk in the Red Sea during the Second World War. Today divers can see trucks, motorcycles and other wartime cargo, but the wreck is a grave historical site and a demanding dive—not an underwater theme park.
Current, depth, boat traffic and penetration risk all shape the plan. Many programmes use two dives: one to understand the exterior and another for selected cargo areas. The exact route depends on certification, experience and conditions.
Inside the holds, maintain trim, avoid touching cargo and never enter beyond training. A torch, guide and clear gas plan are essential; following another group blindly is not a route.
Read the ship’s story before the trip. Knowing why the cargo was there changes the way the motorcycles and boots are seen. Leave every object exactly where it is so the next diver encounters history, not a site stripped for souvenirs.
