Bab al-Donya and Gabal Bab: Springs, Granite Pools and High-Mountain Views

Bab al-Donya and Gabal Bab offer a different picture of the Saint Catherine high mountains: broad views, granite, freshwater springs and shallow natural pools. Egypt’s official tourism site identifies Ain Najila at the foot of Bab al-Donya, where spring water feeds a stone fountain, creek and pools.
Water in Sinai is never a guarantee. Flow and pool depth vary with season and rainfall, so plan the hike around the landscape rather than a promised swim.
These routes need a local Bedouin guide. The useful knowledge is practical—where the path turns, which water point is active, how long the group needs and when weather makes a route unwise.
Carry your own water even when a spring is expected, and do not contaminate pools with soap or waste. The reward is not only a summit. It is the transition from dry granite to a small living water system hidden in the mountains.
