Gabr el Bint: The Southern Dahab Dive Worth the Journey

Gabr el Bint lies south of Dahab and is commonly reached by boat; some operators combine the journey with a camel approach depending on the programme. The distance from town is part of what keeps the day feeling different from an ordinary shore-dive schedule. Underwater, the area is known for healthy reef scenery, walls and coral gardens. The exact dive depends on wind, current and where the boat or guide enters, so there is no single route that every visitor should expect. Wide-angle photography suits the landscape, especially when a diver is used for scale. Keep the subject off the coral and let the guide choose a safe place to pause. Because the site is remote, planning matters more: water, sun protection, equipment checks and a realistic return time. Gabr el Bint is worth treating as a full experience, not as a box to tick between two rushed dives.

The Islands, Dahab: A Coral Maze Instead of a Wall Dive

The Islands, south of central Dahab, feels different from the town’s classic wall dives. Instead of following one obvious edge, divers move through coral blocks, sandy passages and narrow corridors that create the feeling of a living maze. That topography makes navigation part of the experience. Stay close to the guide, keep a stable position above the reef and avoid shortcuts over fragile coral. Visibility may be excellent, but it does not replace route awareness. For photography, a wide-angle lens works well for coral architecture and a diver placed carefully in the frame. Smaller subjects are present too, yet switching attention constantly can make it easy to lose the group in the formations. The Islands is a good choice after a check dive, when buoyancy is settled and the team wants something more spatial than a wall. Site access and the exact route vary with conditions, so the local dive centre should make the final call.

Ras Abu Galum is a protected area north of Dahab, while the Blue Lagoon lies a short ride farther north. Together they are often sold as one fast day trip; they are better understood as a change of pace. Access can involve hiking, boat, camel or local vehicle arrangements. At Abu Galum, reef, mountains and Bedouin camps meet in a landscape with limited infrastructure. The Blue Lagoon is known for its open view and wind sports, but conditions and available activities vary. Bring water, cash, sun protection and only what you can carry without leaving waste. Electricity and connectivity may be limited. Do not expect resort service inside a protectorate. Most importantly, avoid standing on coral, collecting shells or pushing vehicles and boards into sensitive areas. A slower visit gives local hosts time to guide the experience and gives the landscape space to remain the reason people travel there.
