Mount St Catherine: Egypt’s Highest Summit for Prepared Hikers

Mount St Catherine is Egypt’s highest summit, generally listed at about 2,642 metres. It is a more demanding objective than the familiar Mount Sinai sunrise route and suits hikers with fitness, proper footwear and time for a full mountain day.
The challenge is not technical climbing on the standard route, but sustained ascent, uneven trail, altitude, temperature change and route knowledge. Winter can bring severe cold and occasional snow; summer makes early timing and hydration essential.
Use a local Bedouin guide. The high-mountain region contains old paths, gardens and water points that are understood through living local knowledge, not only a phone track.
Build up gradually if the hike follows days of diving or travel. Carry layers, food, water and a basic first-aid kit, and agree on turnaround decisions before starting. Reaching the highest point is satisfying; returning with the group safe and enough energy to appreciate the mountain is the real measure of a good day.
